Kix Brooks (of Brooks and Dunn) talks with Carrie Underwood
AP Online; 1/19/2006; JOHN GEROME, Associated Press Writer
No danger of Kix Brooks running out of material when he takes over as host of ABC Radio's "American Country Countdown" this week.
As half of the hit country music duo Brooks & Dunn, he sees a lot more behind-the-scenes stuff than most country-music experts.
It helps that Brooks likes to talk. While taping an interview with singer Carrie Underwood, he couldn't keep from ribbing her about a disclaimer she included on her debut album, "Some Hearts."
Underwood was worried fans might get the wrong idea about "Before He Cheats," a dark song about a woman so angry with her boyfriend that she takes a key to the side of his car.
Brooks had a field day with it: "I like how you keyed somebody's car in that song _ and you seem like such a nice person."
"I never actually keyed anybody's car," Underwood shot back, laughing.
Brooks: "I know, but ... you went on a little bit too long about it. ... By the time you got done I was like 'Wow, she really did key somebody's car.'"
The syndicated "American Country Countdown" runs down Billboard magazine's Top-40 country songs. ABC promotes it as the longest-running and most-listened to countdown show in the nation, with more than 400 radio stations broadcasting it.
Brooks replaces longtime host Bob Kingsley on the weekly, four-hour program.

With 36.3 million audience impressions during the tracking week, "American Idol" champ Carrie Underwood crowns hot Country Songs with "Jesus, Take the Wheel."
Underwood's single gains more than 2 million impressions to become the chart's first solo female victor since Sara Evans spent two weeks atop the chart in the fall with "A Real Fine Place to Start."
Although Underwood's ballad steps 2-1, two former chart-toppers just below her bullet with significant increases.

They'll sing and sign the National Anthem (Source: www.kingcountyjournal.com)
Ten-year-old Kaylie Whitmore of Renton has never heard recording artist Carrie Underwood.
Nor is it likely that she ever will. Kaylie is deaf.
But Kaylie and Underwood will be side by side at Qwest Field today. Underwood, the country singer who won the 2005 ``American Idol'' competition and went on to sell 2 million copies of her debut album, will sing the national anthem.
Kaylie, a fifth-grader at the Northwest School for the Hearing Impaired, will sign the anthem. (It's a repeat performance for Kaylie. She did a preseason Monday night football game, too.)
``She's flying high. She did a little jig when she found out,'' said Pam LaFollette, Kaylie's mom.
``She did not know who Carrie Underwood was, so we got the CD. She looked at it and said, `Oh, my goodness. She's beautiful.'''
LaFollette said the Seahawks provided three game tickets. The family was able to buy three more so Kaylie, her mom and stepdad, her sister and her grandparents will be there. And yes, Kaylie does plan to ask Underwood for an autograph.
``That's why we have the CD,'' LaFollette said.

Carrie Rules Country Charts (Source: cmt.com)
By: Calvin Gilbert
In simultaneously topping both of Billboard primary country charts this week, 22-year-old Carrie Underwood has accomplished a career milestone most country recording artists only dream of.
After just 12 weeks on the chart, Underwood has scored her first No. 1 single with "Jesus, Take the Wheel." On the country albums chart, her double-platinum debut project, Some Hearts, remains at the top spot -- where it has nested nearly every week since it was released in November.
Underwood's national profile will increase even more with fashion photos appearing in the current issues of Allure and Teen Vogue magazines and an upcoming cover story in Cosmo Girl!.
Both country charts remain slightly sluggish as the radio and music industries recovers from their holiday lull.
Underwood knocks George Strait from No. 1 on the singles chart, pushing "She Let Herself Go" to second place while Billy Currington's "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right" spends a second week at No.

Carrie Underwood Podcast
We speak with the former American Idol winner and newly minted country superstar.
by Spence D.
December 15, 2005 - Nobody would be faulted for calling Carrie Underwood's current situation a fairy tale come true. The singer was raised in the small town of Checotah, Oklahoma, the youngest of three siblings. She began utlizing her sweet vocal talents in church and in school musicals. She continued on this path all the way through college, music was a part of her life, but not the focus of it. Instead she was focusing on a career in broadcast journalism.
This is where the fairy tale part comes in. Thanks to a twist of fate , she caught a news story about the tryouts for the 2005 American Idol that were taking place in Cleveland, Ohio. A voice in her head sparked up, reminding her that people had always suggested she try out for the show. Next thing she knew, she was in St. Louis trying out.
If you watched the show this past season then you konw what happened. If you didn't, well Underwood won. Then she headed to Nashville and got her country music jones fixed, releasing her debut solo album, Some Hearts , in November. Needless to say it topped the charts, both on the pop and country side of things. Life is good.
We caught up with Ms. Underwood recently and talked about her whirlwind career, her music, and what it's like to become part of a modern day fairy tale.

Carrie Spends Time With Idol Hopeful (Source: ShelbyStar.Com)
(excert taken)
SHELBY — It has become America's most watched and participated in contests. Thousands flock to audition and millions tune their televisions in to watch. And Shelby native Heather Ellison went to take her shot at music stardom.
American Idol, the popular television show that allows viewers to vote for who should win, will air its new season beginning Jan. 17. But auditions were held in September, and show hopefuls could audition in one of seven cities.
Ms. Ellison, a junior at N.C. State University, flew to Denver with her mother. She almost backed out.
“We just can't decide about you,” Ms. Ellison remembered the producers saying to her.
They asked her to sing a second song, and she chose “Blue” by Patsy Cline.
As part of the experience, she met last year's American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood. She also met Bo Bice, last year's runner-up.
“I spent 30 minutes with Carrie,” Ms. Ellison said. “The way they portrayed her on TV was the way she is.”
Miss Underwood also called Ms. Ellison's sister and father while backstage.
In the end, they cut Ms. Ellison, telling her to work on her lower ranges and come back to audition again next year.
She's practicing just in case.
“I'd love to go back next year,” Ms. Ellison said.

Carrie Underwood's Musical Beginnings (Source: netmusiccountdown.com)
Carrie's music career starts as a 3-year-old heavy breather
By Neil Haislop
NASHVILLE, TN Friday Dec.30.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Carrie Underwood says she started her singing career at age three, singing in church.
But her first appearance was just heavy breathing into a microphone.
She tells Premiere Prep, "I started singing when I was really little in church. I was supposed to sing 'Jesus Loves Me' with this other little boy. I took the microphone, and I held it really close to my mouth and I started breathing really loud. That's all you could hear in the church was me going 'haaa haaaa haaa.' So that was my debut."
